I’m currently in the market for a new music player. I’m not in a rush to buy one already since I can wait for another 3-6 months to purchase one. I’ve had a first-gen iPod mini for a few years now. Even though it’s still in a great working condition, I think it’s about time that I update my music player capabilities.
Now, I can always stay with the iPod line since I’ve already invested so much into it (library, purchased tracks from iTunes, podcasts, etc.), but I feel like there are better players out there with more features that I might need for the same price. While I do find the iPod touch very sexy and so tempting to just walk into an Apple Store and buy one, I think it’s a waste of money (for now) since it only has 8/16GB of storage for $329+. The only novelty it has for now is the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store and Safari browser… and the touch interface, of course! I think that the iPod classic in 80/160GB is so much worth it to buy instead of that. I have quite the music library so it would really be nice to carry all of it around in just one device and not having to select playlists or songs you want in it. Also, there’s buzz going on that the iPhone should be releasing here in Canada very soon… either the end of the year or early 2008. Now, that’ll totally make me get one since it’ll be totally better and more worth it than the iPod touch since it’s a mobile phone too!
I’m also looking at Zune 2 . It’s still not available in Canada, but it’s not like I can’t get it from the US or anything. You might be wondering why I would even consider getting it, but there’s just a few more features it has that the iPod touch doesn’t (and which, I believe should have!) The new Zunes will come with wi-fi syncing (meaning, you can sync your library/tunes wirelessly without having to plug the device in your computer), FM radio, and the ability to get my Windows Media Center recorded TV shows. The TV show syncing is the one I love since I use WMC. What I love about it too is that even the old Zunes (with the round navigation wheel) can be updated with those functions just by a simple software update. iPods can’t do that.
We’ll see how it goes in the next little while. I might just skip buying one altogether since I really just use my iPod mini to listen to songs while driving and whenever I take transit from time to time. If I was still taking transit frequently, then I would’ve already bought a newer player a long time ago. Also, I’ll need to save up money for it. It’s not like I’m already not living paycheck to paycheck! *sigh*
